The college was established by Hon’able Maharaja Balrampur “late Shri Maharaja Pateshwari Prasad Singh” in memory of his loving late mother Maharani Lal Kunwari in 1955. Then the college was started with faculties of Science and Arts streams and was inaugurated by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, late Shri K. M. Munshi. Department of Botany was initially premier Department of this college. Its history is divided in two parts.
A. At UG level (1955 to Present)
Initially this college was affiliated to Agra University, Agra. Dr. A. K. Saxena was the first who joined the Department of Botany. After that Dr. P. S. Kapoor joined the Department as Head in 1957-58 and continued till his superannuation. He established and enriched the Department through various ways such as through establishment of Botanical Garden, Museum and Green house. At UG level this Department was served by various renounced faculties. Among them were:

- P. K. Bhattacharya (Former Mycologist in Canada)
- V. K. Srivastava (Former Principal and head, Department of Botany, D. B. College, Orai.
- Bishram Rai (Former Principal and head, Department of Botany, S. M. College, Chandausi.
- V. N. Srivastava (Former Scientist IARI, New Delhi)
Besides the above faculties Dr. P. P. Tripathi and Dr. S. V. Singh also served in this Department at UG level.
B. At PG level (1970 to Present)
In 1970 the Department was uplifted to Post-Graduate level. At that time College was affiliated to Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur. Dr. P. S. Kapoor became the first Reader and Head of the Department. Dr. J. P. Tewari was appointed as the first Post-Graduate faculty of the Department and Dr. P. P. Tripathi and Dr. S. V. Singh who already served serves the Department also raised it to the rank of PG faculty member. Later on this PG Department was enriched by different disciplines of Botany which are as follows

Now a day’s Botany Department is flourished with Botanical Garden having several rare and endangered plants, well equipped museum and Green House under the supervision of Prof. Dr. N. K. Singh, FBS, Principal and Head, Department of Botany, M. L. K. P. G. College, Balrampur.
More than 120 students got Ph. D. degree from this Department and various research projects funded by UGC, CSIR, DST, DOEn and Woman scientist projects running successfully since the beginning of the Department at Post-Graduate level.

The current thrust areas of specialization of the Department are:
- Plant Pathology
Research work was conducted basically on the pathogen that infect on crop plants in Balrampur and nearby regions. The major fungal pathogen especially different new strains were observed. Our next target is to develop some ecofriendly practical approach for eradication of these pathogens.
- Plant Physiology
In plant physiology major research was conducted on the negative allelopathic interaction of exotic weeds. Our major research is to develop some protocol for the eradication of these weeds and preparation of bioherbicides.
- Water Resource and Management
The quality of water in the district is very poor specially the ground water. It has toxic levels of arsenic. In water resource and management research is going on the collection of water sample from various places of industrial and municipal regions of Balrampur.
- Plant systematic and Ethnobotany
Survey of flora of Terai region with emphasis on ethno medicinal use of plants was done.

He has successfully guided 17 Ph. D. students and published many research papers in the national and international journal of repute. He has been selected as Principal by UP Higher Education Commission with IIIrd rank. He has served M. L. K. (P.G.) College, Balrampur, as Principal from 2015-17 and 2019-till date.
- Dr. D. D. Tiwari
He has successfully guided 18 Ph. D. students and published more than 70 papers in the national and international journal of repute. He is awarded prestigious Indian Botanical Organization of India award fellow of Indian Botanical Society (FBS) and Siddharth Tathagat Kala-Sahitya Sansthan International special award on 11 Nov 2018 on international contribution (Indo-Nepal)
- Dr. Ravindra Kumar Pandey
He has published more than 20 research papers in reputed journal and has attended many international and national seminars/conferences. He has edited/written books/chapters in book on relevant topics of botany.

He has published 13 research papers in reputed journals and has one patent. He has attended many international and national seminars/conferences/workshops and presented abstracts.

He has published various research papers in reputed journals and has attended many international and national seminars/conferences/workshops. He has got Lal Bahadur Shastri Global Award for Biodiversity in the field of Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources on 22 May 2019.
